I work at Viget Labs, a very cool web consulting firm in Falls Church, and I’ve been asked to find a needle in a haystack. Viget was founded by two brothers who believe in creativity, hard work, and integrity. We want to hire someone who is exceptional, so I’ve tried to create an exceptional job posting.
We’re looking for a person who is able to make a profound impact on our company culture on a daily basis. The position is entitled, "Office Manager"; but, I’m hoping to quickly nickname you “Office Wizard.” On your year anniversary maybe we will buy you a plaque that says, “Master of the Office.”
I look forward to the day when Cindy will say, “I wondered if asking you to handle the whole mailing would be too overwhelming -- but, you really pulled it off!” I relish the thought of Andy going over a checklist with you before a big client meeting and concluding, “Wow, you’ve thought of everything.”
I know you’re out there. You want to be a part of something great. You want to feel engaged and motivated, appreciated and successful. You love to organize, you love to impress, and you love to stay busy. It doesn’t matter what you studied in school and it doesn’t matter if you’ve ever worked in QuickBooks. It matters if you are punctual, honest, meticulous, and cheerful. It matters if you can notice that the printer paper is low or that the client who arrived 10 minutes early might be thirsty. We know it’s not HARD to do these things; but, it must come naturally to you to notice, care, and take action.
I dream of the day when Brian asks you to stand up at our weekly staff lunch so he can say, “You deserve a round of applause from all of us. The event we hosted here this weekend was a huge success and this is the kind of accomplishment that sets Viget apart from other firms. Because of you, everything ran smoothly and professionally. You have made a major contribution to our reputation and our success.”
I know you’re currently employed and working hard, but feeling dissatisfied. I bet you’re considering going back to school. But, I suggest that it’s not about learning something new -- it’s about being a part of something exciting, something you can believe in and contribute to. We need a person who approaches his or her job with energy and pride. And, I bet you need to be a part of a company that values its employees and holds them to high standards.
Let’s connect. Send us a letter, a video, a post card, a present. Don’t just tell us you’re the needle -- show us. Read about Viget , our founders, our clients, our ideas. Imagine what it might be like to work here and tell us why you think you would love it. Not only that, tell us why you’d love to make Viget Labs an even better place to work.
Two rules:
-No phone calls or visitors (I PROMISE we’ll call you if you impress us).
-If you don’t provide a resume, be sure to give us enough information to assess your skills and experience.
One piece of advice:
-Don’t confuse “creative” with “unprofessional.”
